Breece Hill announces iStoRA Video Archive Server for small to mid-sized broadcast and video organizations

Product Combines Innovative iStoRA Appliance with Pictron Media Gateway Software to Deliver First Fully Integrated Solution to Manage and Store Video Content

Louisville, Colorado – April 19, 2005 – Breece Hill (www.breecehill.com), a leader in information storage and retrieval, today announced that Breece Hill and Pictron have jointly validated a complete integrated video acquisition media asset management and archive solution. Based upon Breece Hill's iStoRA™ Video Archive Server, and designed for small to medium-sized broadcast stations, post-production facilities, and video editing houses, the VAS occupies only 4 U of rack space yet can store up to 660 hours of content @ 25 Mb/sec MPEG2, and manage an unlimited archive of data on the shelf.

Independent and small group stations face the same data growth and archive challenges as their larger corporate cousins as they move into the digital data arena and convert to High Definition (HD) broadcasting. The dynamic and time-sensitive environment of broadcast demands that even smaller organizations must be able to rapidly access archived video content. Typically, these broadcasters have neither the IT staff nor the access to easy, automated and affordable archive solutions.

"The Breece Hill Video Archive Server is an ideal platform for Pictron's Media Gateway Suite of products," said Darwin Kuan, Vice President of Business Development for Pictron. "The combination of a Dual Xeon server for fastsearches in our media database and both on-line Hard Disk and Tape archive storage all in a single package is perfect for our customers."

The iStoRA VAS, part of Breece Hill's next-generation iStoRA integrated disk-to-disk-to-tape (D2D2T) appliance suite, delivers the most efficient and feature rich approach to data lifecycle management and archive functions for the broadcast and video production market by storing data using a combination of hard disk and digital data tapes. The tapes are easily exported out of the unit to the shelf and managed by the archive software at any time. In addition, the archive is not tied to any individual file system for maximum flexibility.

"Our customers need quick and easy access to video data through a solution that is adaptive, automatic and easily customizable," said Scott Leif, president of Globalstor. "iStoRA's Video Archive Server gives our customers easy and quick access to tapes at any time without the hassle of being tied to a particular file system. The iStoRA VAS also has power in reserve and the high performance dual Xeon processors makes searching our customer’s data libraries simple and easy."

iStoRA Video Archive Server (VAS)

Breece Hill's iStoRA Video Archive Server provides broadcasters and video producers with an automated way to archive and easily retrieve video content and related data. The iStoRA VAS offer unique benefits, both to VARs and their end user customers:

  • Easy to install and maintain - disk, tape, server, network connectivity and software for archive management in a single box
  • Advanced functionality - for high availability and rich-content archive management
  • One contact for support and service
  • Lower TCO - typical installation is 30% less than comparable D2D2T solutions

iStoRA VAS technical features include:

  • Pictron Media Asset Management Software
  • Built-in XenData Video Archive software
  • Fully-integrated Video Archive
  • Built-in Dual Xeon Server
  • Online Hard Disk RAID
  • Near-line Digital Data Tape Robotic Library
  • Unlimited offline media support
  • Compact offline storage

The Pictron Media Asset Management software is used to acquire video content. Video scene changes are automatically detected and representative key frames extracted, summarizing the video content into a storyboard format. A text transcript of the video is extracted from closed caption text or through speaker-independent speech recognition to provide synchronized full text indexing. Users can quickly skim through content and search for video segments by visual cues, text content, and database information effortlessly finding key clips of interest. The Pictron Media Gateway Search Server is a complete Web application allowing Internet users to search for and interact with video using standard web browsers. Web surfers, corporate gurus or anyone interested in the power of video can search clips based on text, visual content, or database information. Results are ranked by relevance with representative video frame, text transcript, visual storyboard and database attributes displayed. Users can browse the visual storyboard and navigate to specific video clip locations by specifying the key frame or text transcript line.

The Breece Hill VAS uses XenData's Video Archive Software to manage the video files stored on both the Hard Disk RAID and the Tape Library. It also manages content stored on the shelf allowing users to rapidly retrieve archived footage and restore it to a video server, Web server or computer for use.

XenData Video Archive Software Features:

  • Universal Standard Windows File System for easy transfer of data between systems
