Breece Hill Announces New MaxOptix™ Blue-Violet Laser Optical Drive
Optical Drive Doubles Performance and Capacity for High-Density Storage Needs Including Medical and Document Imaging
Louisville, Colorado – February 14th, 2005 – Breece Hill, a leader in information storage and retrieval for small-to-medium businesses and workgroups, today announced the general availability of the MaxOptix T8 and T7 optical drives. The T8 is based on blue-violet laser technologies, with 3X the capacity of previous MO technology (23.3 GB) and a maximum transfer rate of 11 megabytes per second and the high reliability of optical technology. The T7 is based on Magneto Optical (MO) laser technologies and provides a seamless migration path for those customers using the MaxOptix T6 or earlier generations and doubles the capacity to 9.1 GB and increases speed by 15%. Magneto Optical technology offers full backward read and write compatibility and can be formatted to both Pro Data and UDF formats.
New regulations in healthcare, financial services and other industries are requiring businesses to keep more data for longer and longer periods of time. The T8 and T7 safeguards data for over 50 years. With its larger capacity, the T8 is the ideal solution for high-density and long term data storage needs such as medical images, document imaging records and official documents. Like the T7, it also delivers WORM (write-once-read-many) capability required for record maintenance in the financial services industry.
The T8's capacity is achieved by shortening the wavelength of laser light from red to violet producing a smaller "beam spot." A smaller beam spot enables significantly higher recording densities. The T8 density is 2.6 times greater than conventional magneto-optical drives.
The T8 features an airtight dust proof design that prevents particles from entering the case, and a dual shutter mechanism that blocks dust penetration even with media inside the drive. This guarantees a long life with reliability and data integrity.
The drive is also equipped with a 16MB cache that effectively reduces the load on the host when writing to media and improves performance when accessing data with the aid of a read ahead feature.
"The T8 represents the leading-edge in optical drive technology." said Mark Armstrong, Breece Hill Chief Executive Officer. "The high capacity and reliability of our blue laser technology makes it a great choice for critical data applications. In comparison to MO or DVD drives the T8's superior performance enables larger and more reliable archive solutions."
The cost effective T8 uses a low cost 120 mm diameter disc media best for high volume media production. The single-sided disc is ideal for jukebox applications with higher density slot count due to the slim design of the cartridge, eliminating the need of a flipping mechanism.
Price and Availability
MSRP for the MaxOptix T8 is $2,650; MSRP for the MaxOptix T7 is $1,840. The T8, T7, and MaxOptix's industry standard line of optical media are available immediately through Breece Hill's worldwide network of distributors and resellers.
