Breece Hill Selects XenData Software for Innovative 5 TB Archive Appliance

Breece Hill is now shipping its iStoRA™ Archive Server, which combines disk and SAIT tape in a completely integrated storage appliance managed by XenData Software.

Cambridge, UK– October 11th, 2004 – XenData today announced that Breece Hill LLC, a manufacturer of tape autoloaders, libraries and information storage appliances, is now shipping its iStoRA™ Archive Server, an appliance optimized to archive and retrieve large volumes of data from content rich applications such as medical imaging, digital video, document imaging, email archiving and scientific data gathering.

The iStoRA™ Archive Server includes a ten cartridge SAIT tape autoloader, six serial ATA disks in a RAID configuration, a high performance Intel server running a Windows 2003 Server operating system and XenData Archive Series™ software. The complete system is fully integrated within a compact rack mountable 4U enclosure.

The server presents the disk and tape as a single high capacity logical drive, shared over the network. It provides a central archive that is easy to install, manage and use. The system administrator defines policies (rules) that determine where data files are physically stored. Frequently used files may be retained on both disk and tape, whereas less frequently accessed data may be retained only on tape. Whether on disk or near-line tape, all files are available over the network.

The iStoRA™ Archive Server provides continuous backup of the archived files which means that there is simply no backup window. The server will write files simultaneously to both disk and a specified group of tape cartridges. This immediately provides two instances of the data for high data integrity. The administrator defined policy may include scheduled tape cartridge replication which automatically generates tape cartridge copies for off-site retention. If there is a need to recover an accidentally deleted file or even the complete file system, this is easily achieved using the XenData management software.

The Breece Hill archive appliance supports both standard rewritable and Write-Once-Read-Many (WORM) SAIT tape cartridges. When using WORM media, the iStoRA™ Archive Server becomes an import element in an organization's compliance initiatives. WORM tape cartridges store files in a format that is both non-erasable and unalterable. The integral XenData software provides comprehensive file version management and an audit trail of all file changes and deletions, ensuring data authenticity.

Chris Stone, Director of Business Development at Breece Hill, commented, "We chose XenData software because of its high performance and ease of use, which stem from its tight integration with the Windows Server operating system."
