Barcode Labels - Frequently asked questions

What is the purpose of using barcode labels in my library?

Backup software uses two labels on tape cartridges to uniquely identify the data written on the cartridge. The first label is a barcode label. This label is usually purchased separately from the data cartridges and affixed to the cartridge by the user. It contains both a machine readable and human readable section. The second label is a magnetic label written on the tape. This label is written under host computer control. It is used in conjunction with the barcode label to uniquely identify the cartridge.

The library uses the barcode information to maintain the library cartridge inventory. The cartridge may be any type including a data cartridge or a cleaning cartridge. The tape drive automatically detects the different cartridge families and types in a library based on information in the barcode label. Refer to Colorflex for additional barcode label information.
