iStora - Frequently asked questions
1. In Windows Event Viewer, I see reports of adpu320 or adpu160 errors, should I be concerned?
- Concerned no, curious yes.
The adpu320 or adpu160 error is an Adaptec SCSI Adapter warning message that there is a problem with the SCSI communication from the automation or tape drive to the main server. Most occurrences of this error are seen during initialization, re-start or re-boot of the server. The message simply states that the unit failed to respond to an application request within a defined timeout.
In all cases, it is an effect and not the cause of any problem that might be perceived.
In all but the most extreme cases, your system and the associated application are still functional. In those cases where communication is lost, attempt to restart the system.
In some cases, you may want to press <Pause> during the initial boot to allow the automation and tape drive to come online before the server scans the system.
Often this will fix any issues.
Many things can cause an adpu320 error:
- Tape Drive could be slow to respond when
- System powers up or initializes with tape in drive
- A bad tape is in the tape drive
- Automation is on the same bus
- Transport (movement) operations
- Cleaning is required
- Automation could be slow to respond when
- Bad or no Barcode labels are in system
- Auto-inventory is enabled on systems with less than 10 tapes
- One is u sing front panel diagnostics while application software is operational
- Application Software is
- Not fully implemented with the iStoRA SCSI specification
- Not properly installed
- Not using the correct Windows Driver
Here are a few pointers to reduce or eliminate the system messages:
- ALWAYS remove any tapes from the drive before rebooting the server or shutting off a system
- ALWAYS remove any tapes from the drives before restarting the software application
- Ensure door is shut during power up
- Ensure firmware is 1.53 or greater
- Expire old cleaning tapes
- Don’t use the software application while the door is open
